Rolling on Air

For years I have watched my tires slowly reduce in pressure with time but I always thought that the valves didn't seal perfectly.

In fact what usually happens is the air molecules actually pass through the rubber.

It is quite fascinating to me because I thought that substances like rubber and plastics were impermeable to air. On that note, plastic drink bottles also leak very slowly.

Over a period of years the carbonation will be gone and the drink will slowly evaporate and pass through the plastic as a gas. In a hundred years or more the bottle will be empty of liquid.

I think I am only going to buy glass bottled drinks.

ローリング・オン・エアー

ジェイコブデース！ 先週、 “空気を入れて膨らませる全てのタイヤからは空気が抜けてゆく” という恐ろしいことに気がついたのデース！

長い間、時の経過と共にタイヤの圧力が減少するのを見てきた。でもそれはバルブがきちんと閉まっていないからだ、っていつも思っていたんだ。

現実に起きているのは、空気の分子が本当にゴムを通過してる、ってことなんだ。

これに気付いたとき、どんな気分だったかって？ そりゃあもう驚いたさ。ほら、ゴムやプラスチックといった物質は空気を全く通さないものだと疑っていなかったからね。そういえば、プラスチックの飲み物用ボトルだって、中のものがゆっくりと逃げていくんだよね。

何年もの間に炭酸は抜け去り、中の飲み物は気化し、気体としてプラスチックを通り抜けてゆく。100年かそれ以上後には、ボトルには液体が一滴も残ってない、ってワケ。

これからは飲み物を買うなら、ガラスのボトルにしようっと。
