When keeping it real goes wrong

If you are keeping it real, then you usually don't let other people push you around. It is a very American idea and it typically has a good meaning. To keep it real you must contradict other people and say what you are thinking even when it may not produced a good result.

It is nearly impossible and often undesirable to "keep it real" in Japan because the culture is very different. Because I grew up in the USA it is sometimes difficult to not keep it real.

A funny example of this occurred last week when I was riding my bike to the university. I was riding on the left side of the road, moving with the proper direction of traffic. There were parked cars on left and traffic to my right side. Another person on a bike was riding against the direction of the traffic and directly toward me.

I made the unfortunate decision to KEEP IT REAL so I didn't stop or ride into the traffic. I simply kept my position and hoped that he would move. There was simply no room on the road and we collided. We both fell, but neither of us was hurt. We bowed and said gomen nasi and continued on our way.

This is a good incident of "when keeping it real goes wrong."

「"Keep it real" に失敗するとき」

アメリカに "I'm keeping it real" という表現があるのデース。これには自分の考えや信じていることを守っているという意味がありますネ。（訳者注：例えば友人との別れ際の挨拶に "Keep it real！" と言うことがあります。敢えて訳すとすれば 「自分らしく行けよ」 とか 「しっかりやれよ」 という感じだと思います。）

もしあなたが keep it real しているなら、他人からあれこれ指図されたりしないのデース！ とてもアメリカンな概念ですよね、でも良い意味で使われます。 Keep it realするためには、良い結果が得られない可能性があったとしても、他の人の意見を否定したり自分の考えを述べたりしなければなりません。

日本で "Keep it real" することはかなり不可能に近く、望ましくないのではないでしょうか。文化が違い過ぎます。一方、私はUSAで育ったため、keep it real しないことが難しい場合があります。

先週ある面白い経験をしました。大学に行くために自転車に乗っていたときのことです。私は交通の流れに沿って道路の左側を走っていました。左側には路駐の車、右側には走る車という状況でした。そこへ自転車に乗った人が交通の流れに逆らうように真っ直ぐ私に向かって走ってきたのです。

私はそのとき不幸にも KEEP IT REAL してしまい、止まることも、右にふくれて車が走っている方に移動することもせず、ただ自分の進路を守ってそのまま進んだのです。彼の方が避けてくれるだろうと期待していたのですが、結局逃げ場所が無くなり、私達は衝突してしまいました。二人とも転倒しましたが怪我はありませんでした。それからお互いに頭を下げてゴメンナサイと言い、また自転車に乗り始めたのです。

この出来事は "keep it real" が失敗した好例と言えますネ！
