Critical Mass Rides
On the last Friday of every month in about 400 cities across the USA and all over the world, cyclists get together for a Critical Mass Ride. Formally, "critical mass" refers to the minimum amount of material required to sustain a nuclear reaction. Used casually, it means an important or significant number of people or things. Cyclists use the word in its casual sense for group rides that are intended to make political statements. The idea is that even a small number of people riding together can have an effect on a community.
In the big cities, like New York and San Francisco, the rides sometimes attract thousands of people and last for a couple hours. While the rides have recently become political (for example, in 2004 in NYC, nearly 5000 riders gathered to ride in protest against the Republican Convention and George Bush), they are usually chances to promote cycling and bicycle commuting, to make friends, and to celebrate bicycles.

毎月の最終金曜日、米国と世界の約400の街で、サイクリスト達がクリティカルマスのために集まります。「クリティカル・マス」とは、もともとは核反応が生じるために必要な最小量のことなのですが、重要な、または有意な数の人やものを指すこともあります。サイクリストは集合して自転車に乗ることに対してこの言葉を用い、政治的な意思表示を行っているわけです。少数の人であっても共に自転車に乗ることによって、地域に影響を及ぼせるという考えです。
ニューヨークやサンフランシスコのような巨大都市では何千人もの人が集まり、何時間も続くことがあります。最近ではクリティカルマスは政治的意味を持つようになってきていますが（例えば2004年、ニューヨークでは共和党大会及びジョージブッシュに反対するため、5000人が集い、共に自転車に乗りました。）、その一方、クリティカルマスによってサイクリングや自転車通勤を推し進めたり、仲間を見つけたりすることもできます。

We had a mass ride in Kyoto for three years until several years ago.
It was first Critical Mass in Japan and one of the organizers even opened up a cafe' to provide a space for Mass riders to join and talk.

I found that Critical Mass doesn’t work here after days and months effort for Mass ride to getting bigger. Don’t tell me I never spent enough time of my life.
Maybe, people have changed little bit since then, so why doesn’t somebody start it again.

クリティカル・マスとは違いますが、、自転車好きの知り合いが、サイクリングの企画を立てています。
ヤフーの掲示板名は「３５ｋｍ巡航」と挑戦的ですが、実際には、ゆっくりさんと速いさんで２班に分かれる企画ですから、サイクリングさんも、練習さんも、mtbさんも参加できる企画です。自転車好きなみんなが、とりあえず、サイクリングしようという企画です。
私は、仕事で、お見送りだけしか参加できませんが、
垣根を越えた自転車仲間が参加することを願っています。
